Stephen Hill

Emeritus Professor, University of Wollongong, Australia

Originally a Research Chemist (from University of Sydney), then with Australia’s very first PhD in Business Administration (University of Melbourne), and after multi-disciplinary appointments in Chicago and Sussex, Stephen was appointed Foundation Professor of Sociology at the University of Wollongong in 1974 at age 30. He has published prolifically across nine disciplines – including 24 authored or co-authored books or monographs, and established three research centres – at the University of Wollongong, the last one, competitively awarded, was the Australian Research Council's National Centre of Excellence, The Centre for Research Policy (from 1990 to 1995). Following extensive research, consulting and advice support across Asia and the Pacific, including as Australia’s official Chairman in Founding APEC, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Organisation (1990-1995, he was appointed for over a decade immediately prior to formal retirement as United Nations Regional Director for Science for Asia and the Pacific, and in parallel, Principle Director and Ambassador of the UN organisation, UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation – with particular responsibility for South East Asia, based in Indonesia and part-time in the Director-General's Cabinet in Paris.
